school's out for the summer!

Yesterday was the last day of school till August! The kids ran around all morning with permanent markers, signing each other's shirts. The gym bustled with dodge ball, and then they rushed out of the school when they were set free. Most of them were talking of a summer spent at the pool or a vacation with the fam.

It was fun to see their excitement about the summer. It reminded me of when I was a kid.

I must admit. I did like school a lot growing up. I was usually a little disappointed when school got out - at least through grade school. This is the girl that asked for a big chalk board for Christmas so I could "play school."

Growing up, Mom made the last day of school special. I always looked forward to when she welcomed us home.

We'd walk home to a sign on the back door and signs throughout the house.

YAY!!

School's Out!

It's Summer!

You're Done!

And then there were her signature paper plate spiral decorations, hanging from the chandeliers. I loved those things. They seemed to add to the celebration. I can't wait to hang up paper plate spirals someday on my kids' last day of school.

Excitement is in the air.

  1. I've always loved summer. It's a bit less exciting now that I work through it, but it's still good (not least because my wife gets time off!).
